A hybrid Scully lathe, rebuilt and modernized.
Vinyl Cutting at Lyrebird Sound
This lathe journey started years ago when I found a wrecked Neumann VMS80 in my hometown. It wasn’t beyond saving, but I couldn’t take on a project like that at the time, so I had to let it go — something I’ve regretted ever since.
Years later, I came across a stripped-down Scully 601 in the most unexpected way. It was missing both the platter and the carriage. The platter could be adapted, but the carriage was a different story. Most people said replicating one would be nearly impossible.
With help from people as stubborn as me — Jacob Horowitz, Len Horowitz, and Flo Kaufmann — I was able to model a version of the original, with a few small improvements.
What’s coming together now is a hybrid lathe: original Scully mechanics, modern drive and pitch systems, and custom parts made to spec.
Cutting will be available soon at Lyrebird Sound. It’s been a slow, stubborn process
